BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Fielder Leaves With Jammed Wrist
Detroit’s Cecil Fielder jammed his left wrist trying to make a play at first base Friday night and was forced to leave the game against Oakland at Tiger Stadium.
Fielder was hurt in the seventh inning when he reached for a throw and his hand was hit by runner Carney Lansford’s leg. Fielder finished the top of the seventh, but left for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the seventh.
Fielder’s status was listed as day-to-day. He has played 235 consecutive games for the Tigers.
Fielder has led the majors in home runs and runs batted in the last two seasons. He went into Friday night’s game tied for the AL lead with 20 RBIs, and tied for second with seven home runs.
Baltimore’s Glenn Davis took batting practice before Friday night’s game against Seattle, but there is still no indication when he will return to the Oriole lineup.
Davis, the Orioles’ opening day first baseman, has not played since. The problem had been described as back spasms, then as a muscle in the rib cage, and most recently as a muscle under the arm. Initially his status was listed as day-to-day, but he was later put on the disabled list April 14, retroactive to April 7.
Davis missed 3 1/2 months last year because of a neck injury after being traded from Houston.
