PREP ROUNDUP : El Toro Gets One Hit, but It’s Enough to Beat Mission Viejo in Softball

Megan Juggert scored on Karajean Stephenson’s passed ball in the third inning and host El Toro defeated Mission Viejo, 1-0, in a South Coast League softball game Wednesday.

Juggert had the only hit--a third-inning single--off Mission Viejo’s Jody Lemire (2-9).

Jodi Smith and Misty Lauby (10-3) combined on a four-hitter for El Toro (15-7-1, 5-0 in league). Mission Viejo fell to 6-12, 2-3.

In other South Coast League softball games:

Capistrano Valley 6, Dana Hills 0--Daniela Hugelshofer (8-6-2) allowed one hit--a bloop single in the fourth--and struck out eight for host Capistrano Valley (8-8-2, 3-2). Lucy Jacobs led off the second inning with a home runs for the Cougars. Dana Hills is 5-11, 1-4.

Irvine 13, San Clemente 2--Carley Girton, Shye Nakabayashi, Monika Holstein and Rebecca Smith each had two hits for host Irvine (11-6, 3-2). The Vaqueros scored eight runs in the fifth inning.

In Academy League softball:

Liberty Christian 14, Cal Lutheran 5--Melissa Grippo was three for five and drove in three runs for the visiting Minutemen (11-4, 5-1).

In Sea View League softball:

Tustin 3, Newport Harbor 0--Brooke Betts pitched a two-hitter, had three hits and scored a run for the visiting Tillers. Newport Harbor (7-8, 1-4) made eight errors. Two of Tustin’s runs were unearned.

University 24, Corona del Mar 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Michele Ponce hit a grand slam during an 11-run second inning and pitched a one-hitter for the visiting Trojans (13-9, 3-2).

Woodbridge 4, Saddleback 1--Deanna Black’s double scored Debbie Nasitka and Black scored on a throwing error later during a three-run second inning for the visiting Warriors (21-3, 5-0). Stacey Washington (9-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven.

In Century League boys’ tennis:

Canyon 11, Foothill 7--Eric Lin swept his singles sets for visiting Canyon (12-4, 7-0). Foothill is 11-11, 5-2.

In Empire League boys’ tennis:

Esperanza 18, Cypress 0--Mike Hammer improved his dual match singles record to 45-3 for Esperanza (16-0, 8-0).

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Western 13, Magnolia 5--James Yu swept his singles matches without losing a game for the visiting Pioneers (12-2, 6-1).

In Pacific Coast League boys’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 17, Century 1--Chris Marshall swept his singles sets for the visiting Hawks (7-9, 5-1).

In Century League boys’ track and field:

Santa Ana Valley 97, Orange 29--Daniel Carr won the 110 and 300 hurdles for the host Falcons.

In Empire League boys’ track and field:

Esperanza 77, Cypress 57--Travis Kirschke won the shotput (49 feet 2 1/4 inches) and the discus (166-0) for the Aztecs (5-0 in league).

In Sunset League boys’ track and field:

Fountain Valley 107, Ocean View 29--Derek Sanchez and Mark Sanchez, who are not related, each won two events for Fountain Valley (6-0), which enters league finals next week in first place. Derek Sanchez won the 100 in 11.3 seconds and the 200 in 23.5, and Mark Sanchez won the 800 in 2:00 and the 1,600 in 4:39.6.

In Century League girls’ track and field:

Santa Ana Valley 79, Orange 37--Isis Orejel won the 100, 200 and 400 for the Falcons.

In Empire League girls’ track and field:

Esperanza 110, Cypress 17--Kristy Kierulff won the high jump (5-2), long jump (15-10 1/2) and triple jump (32-2 1/2) for Esperanza (5-0 in league).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ track and field:

Estancia 70, Costa Mesa 57--Tracie Manz (100, 200), Katie Eklof (1,600, 3,200) and Lauren Weaver (100, 300 hurdles) each won two events for the visiting Eagles (4-1).

In Sunset League girls’ track and field:

Edison 114, Huntington Beach 13--Sophomore Julie Koudelka won the 200 (27.6) and the 400 (1:00.3) and anchored Edison’s winning relays. The Chargers (7-0, 6-0) finished the dual-meet season in first place in the league.

Marina 90, Santa Ana 33--Joan Greve won the 100-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump and ran a leg on the winning 400 relay for the Vikings (2-4). Santa Ana is 0-6.

Ocean View 96, Fountain Valley 42--Chrissie Engesser won three events (400, 800 and 1,600) for Ocean View (5-1 in league). Elinor Tolson won three events (100, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles) for Fountain Valley (4-2).

In Empire League boys’ volleyball:

Esperanza 3, Los Alamitos 0--Paul Nihipali had 14 kills for Esperanza (10-2, 6-0), which clinched the league title and extended its winning streak to six matches.

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

Pacifica 3, Santiago 1--Erik Huhta had 17 kills for the visiting Mariners (8-7, 6-5) in a 15-8, 15-3, 12-15, 15-9 victory.

In Pacific Coast League boys’ volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 0--Eric Fegraus and Brad Berberian each had six kills for visiting Laguna Beach (12-2, 7-0).

Laguna Hills 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Aaron Cook and Jeff Brooks each had eight kills in the Hawks’ 15-7, 16-14, 17-15 victory. Laguna Hills is 7-6, 5-2.

In South Coast League boys’ swimming:

Capistrano Valley 89, Irvine 81--Trevor Meyer won the 100 and 200 freestyles and led off the Cougars’ winning 400-freestyle relay team at Saddleback College.

In Century League girls’ swimming:

Villa Park 100, Canyon 70--Catherine Pharris, Mary Krill and Jennifer Blasi each won two events for visiting Villa Park (10-1, 5-0), which moved into position to win its first league championship in school history.

In South Coast League girls’ swimming:

Capistrano Valley 91, Irvine 79--Lisa Jacob won the 200 and 500 freestyles, Cathy Carone took the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley and Jeannine Povey won the 50 and 100 freestyles for the Cougars (4-5, 2-3) at Saddleback College.

Laguna Hills 195, Sunny Hills 209--Jacy Igarashi shot two-under 34 for Laguna Hills (13-9) at Pacific Golf Course.
