In another Empire League baseball game:
Cypress 8, Loara 1--Danny Flanagan’s grand slam helped Cypress to a five-run fifth inning. Kenn Fann added a home run for Cypress (7-6, 5-2). Micah Stovall (2-2) was the winner.
In Arrowhead League baseball:
Calvary Chapel 12, La Sierra Academy 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Greg Smith drove in three runs and Bryce Oakland two for the Eagles (5-3, 1-0).
In Angelus League baseball:
Mater Dei 5, St. John Bosco 4--Darren Troilo hit a game-winning home run in the top of the seventh for Mater Dei (11-1, 5-1). Mike McDonald struck out six and went the distance for the Monarchs.
In Sea View League baseball:
Corona del Mar 10, Newport Harbor 9--Todd Kehrli’s three-run double in the sixth inning gave the Sea Kings (7-4, 4-3) the lead. The Sailors rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on second and third when the game ended.
Saddleback 7, University 0--Winning pitcher Luis Estrella (3-2) had nine strikeouts and drove in four runs for the Roadrunners (11-2, 6-1).
Tustin 3, Woodbridge 1--Brett Hardy had a two-run double in the first inning for the Tillers (9-3, 7-0).
In South Coast League baseball:
Dana Hills 4, Capistrano Valley 3--Brian Ralph’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh scored pinch-runner Ryan Etherton with the winning run for the Dolphins (8-5-1, 4-3). Ethan Wycoff was two for four with an RBI for Capistrano Valley, which suffered its first league defeat.
El Toro 6, San Clemente 1--Jackson Went and Ryan Fullerton drove in two runs each during a six-run fourth inning for the Chargers (6-6, 4-3).
Irvine 10, Mission Viejo 9--Chris Grienke’s single in the seventh inning drove in pinch-runner Kirk Matthews with the winning run for the Vaqueros (8-6, 5-2). Irvine’s Scott Seal had two hits, including a three-run first-inning home run.
In the ninth-place game of the El Segundo baseball tournament:
Arcadia 1, Brea-Olinda 0--Brea-Olinda (9-3) managed just two hits against two Arcadia pitchers.
In South Coast League boys’ swimming:
Mission Viejo 125, Dana Hills 44--Adam Grodzki, Robert Delgado, Matt Turnbull and Marcin Malinski teamed for the fastest 200 freestyle relay in the Southern Section this year, winning the event in 1 minute 29.18 seconds. Mission Viejo did not lose a race.
In South Coast League girls’ swimming:
Capistrano Valley 88, San Clemente 82--Freshman Jeannine Povey won the 200 (2:01.79) and 500 freestyles (5:23.55). Cathy Carone was also a two-event winner in the 100 butterfly (1:00.81) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.36) for the Cougars (2-3, 1-2).
In Century League golf:
Foothill 202, Villa Park 235--Matt Montford shot three-over par 39 at Green River for Foothill.
In Orange League golf:
Valencia 184, Magnolia 267--The Tigers improved to 4-1 in league behind Cody Neptune’s one-under 35. John Lee, Chris Porter and James Wooley each shot 36 for Valencia.
In Sunset League golf:
Marina 290, Edison 300 (12 holes)--Brian Rey shot two-over 51 for Marina (4-0 in league) at SeaCliff. Jay Supple had a 57 for Edison (7-5, 2-2).
In Sunset League golf:
Huntington Beach 199, Fountain Valley 208--Scott Gibson shot one-under 35 and Jeff Farley shot 37 for Huntington Beach (3-1 in league) at Mile Square Park. Matt Rylski shot 39 for Fountain Valley (3-1).
Ocean View 206, Westminster 227--Colleen McGough shot three-over 38 for Ocean View (2-2 in league) at Meadowlark.
In Sea View League golf:
University 207, Newport Harbor 209-- Brian Hadley shot four-over 40 for University (9-3, 5-0) at San Joaquin. Newport Harbor is 7-6 overall and 2-3 in league.
In Empire League boys’ tennis:
Esperanza 14, Los Alamitos 4--Mike Hammer improved to 36-3, sweeping three sets without losing a game, for Esperanza (13-0, 5-0).
In Pacific Coast League boys’ tennis:
Laguna Hills 12, Costa Mesa 6--Junior Chris Marshall swept in singles play, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Laguna Hills is 7-5, 3-0.
In South Coast League boys’ tennis:
Irvine 10, Capistrano Valley 8--Seniors Andy Smith and Lenny Perez swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. Irvine is 7-6, 1-3.
In Century League volleyball:
Villa Park 3, Canyon 2--Ryan Garrahy had 22 kills and Mike Shihad 15 for the visiting Spartans (3-6, 1-2), who won, 4-15, 15-5, 18-20, 16-14, 15-12.
In Empire League boys’ volleyball:
Los Alamitos 3, Cypress 0--Jason Kennedy had 17 kills and Tom Soderling 38 assists in the host Griffins’ 15-12, 16-14, 17-15 victory.
In Olympic League boys’ volleyball:
Capistrano Valley Christian 3, La Mirada 0--Colin Bemus had 24 assists for the Eagles (5-2, 2-2).
