PREPS
Boys and girls all-star games between teams from the Glendale and Burbank areas will be held Friday night at Glendale College.
Phil Sherman of Ribet Academy will coach the Glendale boys’ team, and Drew Lord of Eagle Rock will coach the Glendale girls’ team.
The Glendale area will be represented by players from Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Hoover, Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart, La Canada, St. Francis, Ribet Academy, Eagle Rock, Marshall, Franklin and Verdugo Hills.
The girls’ game begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by the boys’ game.
Richard Mandeville and Jimmy Evans of La Canada High were selected to the All-Southern Section 3-A Division team.
Mandeville, a junior center, and Evans, a senior forward, led La Canada to the Southern Section 3-A title this season.
Orville Turner and Lydell Hill of Ribet Academy were selected All-Southern Section in Division V.
Turner and Hill led the Fighting Frogs to their third consecutive Division V title.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES
Mike Miller, who guided Ribet Academy to a Division V state championship in 1991, is the new basketball coach at Los Angeles City College.
Miller worked as an assistant coach at Cal State San Bernardino this season under former L.A. City coach Reggie Morris.
The Glendale College baseball team continues to struggle through its Western State Conference schedule.
The Vaqueros entered the week 9-16 and 5-10 in the WSC after a 6-3 loss to Valley College on Saturday.
The Vaqueros play host to Cuesta today at Stengel Field and travel to Santa Barbara on Saturday.
Glendale’s men’s and women’s track teams will compete in the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions Saturday.
The Glendale College men’s and women’s tennis team are idle this week because of spring break. They will resume their schedules April 16 at Santa Barbara.
COLLEGES
Konstantine Kindreich of Occidental College qualified for the Division III national championships two weeks ago at the Northridge Relays by finishing the 1,500-meter event in 3 minutes 51.13 seconds.
Kindreich, a junior, is the sixth Occidental athlete to qualify for the nationals, to be held May 27-30 at Colby College in Maine. Other qualifiers include Becky Kopchick (3,000), Jacqui Dent (200 and 400), Jose Garcia (10,000), Gunnar Miller (pole vault) and Mashairi Dunn (200).
The Occidental College baseball team improved to 12-12 and 4-8 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by sweeping a three-game series from Caltech.
Blair Slattery is batting .295 for Occidental with four home runs and 19 runs batted in over 12 games.
PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK
Nancy Evans, Hoover--Evans, a junior, allowed one hit and had 17 strikeouts in the Tornadoes’ 1-0 softball victory over Burroughs.
Evans also singled, helping Hoover improve to 9-2.
COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK
Ed Bedford, Occidental--Bedford, a senior, set three Occidental records and qualified as an All-American in three events at the Division III swimming championships at Buffalo, N.Y.
Bedford finished third in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.92 seconds, the sixth-fastest time in Division III history. He finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 21 seconds and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 45.98 seconds.
Bedford, Occidental’s only representative at the men’s championships, finished 21st among 65 teams.
WHERE THEY ARE NOW
J.P. Roberge--Roberge, a former standout at St. Francis High, is batting .404 for USC in Pacific 10 Conference games.
Roberge, a 5-11, 170-pound redshirt freshman infielder, had 14 hits in 30 at-bats over the past 10 games.
