West European defense experts begin a three-day symposium today to discuss ways of bridging an important gap in the security of central Europe following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The experts, drawn from parliaments of the nine-nation West European Union, will focus on the security needs of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary--nations that once belonged to the Warsaw Pact, but which now float in a kind of defense limbo between the countries of the western alliance and the residual elements of the Soviet Union.

Results of the symposium will be presented to a meeting of the foreign and defense ministers of WEU member states when they meet in Bonn June 19th.
