Off-Duty Deputy Hurt in Exchange of Gunfire
An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded Thursday in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect breaking into his car at a Norwalk shopping center, authorities said.
Deputy Troy Riemersma, 26, was in good condition after undergoing surgery at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, said sheriff’s spokesman John Ashley.
The shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. outside a Music Plus store in the 11500 block of East Rosecrans Avenue near Pioneer Boulevard, Ashley said. Riemersma suffered gunshot wounds to his thigh and back.
The shooting occurred as the deputy, a five-year veteran, left the store and spotted someone breaking into his car, Ashley said. The deputy confronted the suspect and the two exchanged shots. The gunman scaled a wall and escaped.
