Maryland Hires Holy Cross’ Duffner as Coach
Mark Duffner, who compiled a 60-5-1 record in six seasons at Holy Cross, was named coach at Maryland.
Duffner, 38, was recruited briefly by Maryland. But he ended up playing defensive tackle for William & Mary and served there as a graduate assistant in 1975 and at Ohio State (1975-76) before taking over as the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati (1977-80). He then served as a defensive coordinator at Holy Cross for five years before being named head coach in 1986 and turned a 4-6-1 team into a 10-1 club in his first season.
