COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Rancho Santiago Hits 15 Three-Pointers to Win
Freshman Ruben Oronoz scored 30 points and Rancho Santiago College set a school record with 15 three-pointers while defeating Golden West, 102-98, Friday in a championship semifinal game of the Chaffey men’s basketball tournament.
Oronoz’s seven three-pointers tied the school’s single-game record set last season by Bret Pagett in a game against Moorpark. Eric Dahl added 21 points and Glenn Greene scored 16 for Rancho Santiago, which made 23 of 31 free-throw attempts, including 18 of 22 in the final 10 minutes.
Mark Johnson scored 24 points and Paig Parish added 21 for Golden West, but each fouled out.
In the Mt. San Jacinto women’s basketball tournament:
Cypress 58, Oxnard 41--The Chargers improved to 3-0, surpassing their victory total of a year ago when they finished the season 2-27. Cypress forward Joanna Costello led all scorers with 17 points, guard Sandra Bernardo scored 15 and center Jennifer Johnson had 14. Oxnard, which fell to 0-4, used only five players.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Orange Coast 89, Glendale 48--Jena Davis scored 20 points and Colleen Hatch had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Orange Coast (3-1). Gillian Bean and Nichole Champion had 10 points apiece for the Pirates.
Golden West 107, LA Southwest 23--Jennifer Harney had 20 points and Kim Kordik had 16 for the Rustlers (6-1), who extended their home winning streak to 38 games.
