Thirty-six names appear on this year’s Hall of Fame ballot, none of them Pete Rose. Rose would have qualified for the ballot for the first time this year, meeting the requirement of five years of retirement as an active player.

But the Hall of Fame’s board of directors voted in February to make any former players banned from the game ineligible for the ballot, and Rose was barred indefinitely for gambling in 1989.

Now only one first-time eligible, former pitcher Tom Seaver, is expected to earn that distinction this year. Seaver won 311 games with four major league clubs.

Another newcomer to the ballot, Tony Perez, could receive substantial support. Perez had a .279 average for 23 seasons and drove in 100 or more runs seven times.
