Abort Hotel Plans

We are writing to clarify our positions and rectify omissions relating to the article “Opponents of Proposed Hotel Get Early Start” (Times, Nov. 10).

We formed the Concerned Brentwood Homeowners to maintain the present residential use of the Eastern Star property abutting Chaparal Street and to oppose hotel use, commercial use or any other than residential use of any of the Eastern Star property.

We would have hoped the Brentwood Homeowners Assn., which purportedly represents the homeowners of Brentwood, would support our position. Unfortunately, the Brentwood Homeowners Assn. is actively politicking for hotel use of the Eastern Star property and for hotel use of the single-family residential portion of the site abutting Chaparal Street.

The Times article characterizes the Brentwood Homeowners Assn. as a “larger, longstanding community group.” However, based on over 600 calls responding to our “Hotel Alert” distributed in the Los Angeles Times and a prospective overflow house at our “hotel protest” meeting at the University Synagogue at 8 p.m. Nov. 21, it is clear the residents, homeowners and merchants of Brentwood have the same position as the Concerned Brentwood Homeowners: that a hotel on Barrington and Sunset would exacerbate already impossible traffic conditions and cause even more traffic accidents at the dangerous intersection of Sunset and Barrington.

The large employee base of a “luxury hotel similar to the Hotel Bel-Air” (the Bel-Air has 91 rooms and 320 employees) together with the visitor base, the guest base and the delivery base will combine to effect a disastrous impact on the community. The parking won’t confine itself to the premises of the hotel, but spill over into the adjoining neighborhoods.

We hope that the Brentwood Homeowners Assn. will respond to the wishes of their constituency so we can all join together and abort this abomination before it gets into the system.
