COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Stanford Also Getting Bowl Interest
Stanford, which has won three games in a row and is 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Pacific 10, also is drawing attention of bowl scouts. Stanford plays at Oregon Saturday, and a Freedom Bowl scout will be watching the Cardinal for the fourth consecutive week. The Aloha Bowl reportedly also is interested.
Stanford must win three of its remaining four games to qualify for a bowl invitation. Under NCAA rules, a team must have six victories over Division I-A opponents to qualify for a bowl invitation. One of Stanford’s victories is over Cornell, a Division I-AA school.
Florida State quarterback Casey Weldon is nursing a strained ligament in his left knee and could miss the Seminoles’ game at Louisville Saturday. The backup is Brad Johnson, a senior who started six games last season.
Johnson calls Weldon his best friend. “Casey has probably been the best thing that happened to me at Florida State as a player and person, but also the worst thing since I’ve had to sit down and watch him the last year and a half,” Johnson said.
