An 88-year-old Imperial Beach woman died Friday after the car in which she was a passenger was broadsided while going the wrong way on Interstate 8 near Main Street in El Cajon.

Lucille Thompson Bryan of the 1100 block of 7th Street was with her husband, Xenophoual, traveling east in the westbound lane of the freeway at 10:15 p.m. Thursday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Apparently realizing he was on the wrong side of the road, Xenophoual Bryan attempted to drive across the center divider to the eastbound lanes when his car was broadsided by a Volvo.

The couple was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital where Lucille Bryan died at 12:18 a.m. Friday, medical examiner investigator Charles Kelley said. Xenophoual Bryan, 93, is in fair condition with a bump on the head, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Ralph Riccardi of the 2100 block of Schenley Terrace in San Diego, driver of the Volvo, was not injured.
