Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jim Everett and California Angels pitcher Bert Blyleven have teamed with Mayor Fred Hunter to take an anti-drug message to the city’s movie and television screens.

In two 30-second public service announcements, which premiered Friday at the Cinemapolis Theater Complex in east Anaheim, the athletes and the mayor ask viewers to “make the right choice” and encourage youngsters to make their lives drug-free.

“Everett and Blyleven are role models,” Hunter said after the Friday showing for some city schoolchildren. “A lot of kids look up to these people.”

The announcements will run immediately before each film at the complex’s 10 theaters and on MultiVision Cable channels.

“We hold no illusions that the Everett and Blyleven spots will solve the (drug) problem for us,” the mayor said in a written statement. “We do hope, however, that the constant repetition of the ‘right choice’ message will go a long way in convincing at least one young person that there is life without drugs.”

Hunter said the announcements were funded by Ralphs Grocery Co. and filmed at Anaheim Stadium.
