PREP NOTES
Phouphet Singbandith, who set the Orange County triple jump record and won the state meet while at Magnolia High in 1990, has left Nebraska and enrolled at Long Beach City College, former Magnolia High Coach Bob Mangan said.
Singbandith placed third in the Big Eight Conference outdoor championships as a freshman last spring, but was frustrated by continual lower leg injuries. Unlike in high school, where he jumped only as often as he had to to win, Singbandith was asked to take all six jumps each time he competed for Nebraska, Mangan said. He also was asked to long jump.
“He was unhappy with the jumping philosophy back there,” Mangan said. “And his family missed him, too, so it was a combination of things.”
Singbandith will compete for Long Beach this spring.
