Tritons Get Volleyball Victory Against Cal State L.A.
UC San Diego’s women’s volleyball team overcame a sluggish start Wednesday to take a 15-12, 15-4, 15-5 nonconference victory against host Cal State Los Angeles (5-6).
The Tritons trailed 11-7 in the first game before bounding back behind the play of outside hitter Vikki Van Duyne and middle blocker Elizabeth Tan, who combined for 20 kills.
The Tritons (10-2) had nine service aces to Cal State L.A.’s three.
SOCCER
Poway High graduate Merindo Tennace kicked a team-leading seventh goal as Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego played to a 1-1 women’s tie at San Bernardino.
Tennace, a sophomore forward, scored at 17:53 for CSUSB. For the Tritons, Cindy Eddy scored at the end of regulation to salvage the tie.
UCSD, third ranked in Division III, is 4-0-1. The unranked Coyotes are 5-2-1.
Momir Horvatek scored twice for The Master’s College to hand Point Loma Nazarene a 2-1 NAIA District III men’s defeat at Cal Lutheran. Horvatek scored at the 63- and 82-minute marks. The Master’s improved to 2-5, 2-1; PLNC fell to 1-5, 0-2.
GOLF
Fallbrook’s Craig Anderson and Malibu’s Bill O’Connor are the leading the Trans-Mississippi 4-ball championship in Shadow Glen Golf Club after the second round.
Anderson and O’Connor have a two-stroke lead over Pebble Beach’s Chuck Well and Carmel’s Doug Dusenberry.
