Klein Leads Girls’ Junior Golf Championship

Emilee Klein of Studio City, a student at Notre Dame High, earned medalist honors at the midpoint of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Golf championship in Wichita, Kan.

Klein fired a one-over-par 73 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 142, the best 36-hole score heading into the match-play portion of the tournament.

Kacie Meyers of Venice, Fla., was second with a 36-hole total of 147.

Three members of the Northridge Baseball Assn. played on a team of 12-year-olds that won an 82-team national tournament Sunday in La Crosse, Wis.

Royal McMackin, Danny Phillips and John Wilson all competed for West Los Angeles, which defeated Waukesha, Wis., 4-0, in the championship game of the Stars of Tomorrow tournament.

Phillips was the starting pitcher in the final and was relieved by Wilson, who pitched the final four innings and was credited with the victory.

Phillips drove in two runs and combined with Wilson on a four-hitter. Wilson had two triples and one run batted in.

McMackin, the younger brother of former Chatsworth High standouts Reed and Rex McMackin, was the starting catcher. He had two hits and drove in a run.

Antelope Valley College outside linebacker Rick Starling has signed a letter of intent to play in the fall at Wayne State College, in Wayne, Neb.

Starling (5-foot-9, 170 pounds) was the Marauders’ most valuable player last season and was an All-Foothill Conference selection. Wayne State competes at the NCAA Division II level.

Soccer player Amad El-Zarou has signed a letter of intent to attend Cal State Northridge.

El-Zarou (5-foot-8, 150 pounds) is from Tripoli, Lebanon, and is a 1989 graduate of Tripoli Evangelical High.

Babe Laufenberg, a 1978 Crespi High graduate, was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday. It was the eighth time he was waived in a professional career that began in 1983 as the Washington Redskins’ sixth-round draft choice.

Laufenberg, 31, joined the Cowboys as a free agent in 1989.
