Quintana Has Six RBIs in Inning
BOSTON — Carlos Quintana tied a major league record by driving in six runs in one inning as the Boston Red Sox snapped a nine-game home losing streak with an 11-6 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
Quintana hit a grand slam off Oil Can Boyd (0-2) and a two-run double off Wayne Rosenthal as the Red Sox scored 10 runs in the third inning. He is only the 11th player in major league history to drive in six runs in one inning.
Before Quintana, the last player to do it was Atlanta’s Dale Murphy in 1989. Quintana was the first American League player to accomplish the feat since Jim Lemon of the Washington Senators in 1959.
The Red Sox, who had averaged only 2.7 runs per game since the All-Star break, ended their longest losing streak at Fenway Park since 1927. Ellis Burks and Wade Boggs each had three hits for Boston.
Boston, which had lost 10 of its previous 11 games, sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning. The Red Sox scored at least 10 runs in an inning for the 24th time, an AL record. The last time the Red Sox accomplished the feat was Aug. 21, 1986, when they scored 12 runs in the sixth inning of a 24-5 victory over Cleveland.
Rookie Kevin Morton (2-2) got the victory Tuesday despite allowing four runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. Dennis Lamp pitched the final 2 2-3 innings for Boston, giving up RBI singles by Brian Downing and Kevin Reimer in the eighth.
Downing, Juan Gonzalez and Rafael Palmeiro hit solo homers for Texas.
The Rangers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a double by Ruben Sierra, a wild pitch and a balk. But then the Red Sox erupted against Boyd, making his first start in Fenway since being released by Boston after the 1989 season.
Boyd loaded the bases on three walks before Quintana hit a 1-1 pitch into the left-field screen for his seventh homer.
Jack Clark singled, Mo Vaughn flied to center and Burks followed with a single that knocked out Boyd. Tom Brunansky then singled off Rosenthal to load the bases.
Tony Pena then drove in two runs with a double to left. A walk loaded the bases for the third time in the inning and Boggs followed with a two-run single. One out later, Quintana doubled home the ninth and 10th runs of the inning.
