Pasadena : Scrutiny for Swim Center

The City Council on Tuesday told the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center board that it wants to review the choice of a new director for the $6.5-million swimming complex in Brookside Park.

Although the council has no direct control over the center, center directors agreed to the council’s scrutiny.

The center board sought to extend repayment of its five-year, $3.5-million city loan to 10 years and to lower the current yearly payments of $700,000 after it paid only $340,000 for 1990.

Council members refused the new repayment plan, saying they were concerned about apparently shaky finances at the center and the perception that it is not serving minorities.

Councilman Isaac Richard was also upset that the board appeared close to choosing a white candidate as director. Two other finalists are black, as was the center’s former director, who resigned in December.

Officials refused to release the three finalists’ names.
