San Diego City Council on Monday approved the addition of a seventh staff member in Councilman Ron Roberts’ office and a job-sharing arrangement for two of Councilman John Hartley’s aides.

Roberts will hire the new staffer this fall to work on downtown issues, at an annual cost of $32,800 for salary and benefits, said Roberts aide Michael Abrams.

Much of downtown was added to Roberts’ council district during this year’s council redistricting. The reapportionment also increased the population of Roberts’ District 2 from 111,000 to 141,000, Abrams said.

Abrams said the city’s eight council members have an average of seven staff members.

Two staffers will share the vacancy created by the departure of one of Hartley’s aides at no increase in salary or benefits, an aide said.
