Cal Lutheran’s Farber Earns Baseball Honor

Bob Farber of Cal Lutheran has been selected to the GTE Academic All-American College Division baseball team.

Farber, a first-team selection, batted .414, scored 37 runs and drove in 23 for the Kingsmen this season.

The junior from Thousand Oaks High has a 3.74 grade-point-average and is majoring in psychology.

Dan Chergey, a sophomore pitcher at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, was named most valuable pitcher in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Chergey, a Thousand Oaks High product, was 8-4 with six complete games and an earned-run average of 2.09.

The Athletics Congress Southern California Assn. Youth track and field championships will be held at Rio Mesa High and Oxnard College on Saturday and Sunday. Competition both days begins at 8:30 a.m.

The meet will consist of five boys’ and five girls’ age-group divisions, ranging from bantam (athletes born in 1981 or later) to young men and young women (born in 1973 or 74).

All events will be held at Rio Mesa High except for the intermediate boys, the young men 2,000-meter steeplechase and all divisions of the javelin, which will be held at Oxnard College.

Torino Carr, a distance runner who helped Taft High to win the City Section cross-country title last year, will attend UC Davis in the fall. He also intends to compete for the Aggies.

Carr said he chose the Northern California Athletic Conference school because of its veterinary-medicine department.

As a senior this spring, Carr timed 4:27.69 for 1,600 meters.

Missy Cress, most valuable player on the Moorpark College softball team in 1990, has signed a letter of intent to play for Cal State Northridge.

Adam Davirro, who helped lead Harvard High to the Southern Section 3-A Division volleyball championship, has been selected most valuable player of the San Fernando League. Davirro, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, has committed to play at UC Santa Barbara.

Seniors Brian Baise, Andres Carlo and Eric Wells, along with junior Steve Keck, were other Harvard players selected to the first team.

Registration for an American Roundball Corp. summer basketball league will be held Sunday at North Hollywood High at noon. Competition is open to players in grades three through college.

Dani O’Byrne of Westlake High has accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Pepperdine. O’Byrne (5-10) was a two-time Times All-Ventura County selection who scored 1,400 points in her four-year career.

Erin Mutch of Newbury Park High has committed to play volleyball at Humboldt State, an NCAA Division II school in Arcata, Calif. Mutch (5-6) was a three-time All-Marmonte League selection.
