West’s Small-Business Growth Tops U.S. Average: A study of more than 1 million small businesses found that the total employment growth rate in a 14-state Western region was more than double the national average over a recent two-year period. US West, which commissioned the study, said that for 1989-90, employment in its region grew 4.3%, compared to the national average of 1.6%. The study, conducted by Cognetics Consultants Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., forecast that jobs in the West will grow at 1.4% a year, compared to a national average of 1.1%.
