Gunfire was sprayed into the front parking lot of KGTV (Channel 10) in East San Diego on Thursday afternoon, injuring a station employee and also striking two parked cars, authorities said.

Tyler Davis, 24, an engineer, was hit by a single bullet in the right hip, police said. He was in good condition at Mercy Hospital.

Police said there was no known motive for the shooting and that no suspects were in custody.

The shots may have been fired drive-by style, from one or more vehicles, at or near 4600 Air Way, police said. The site is close to the intersection of California 94 and 47th Street.

The station had received no threats and no one had called to claim responsibility for the shooting, said Brad McLellan, news assignment editor.

The shootings occurred at 5:20 p.m., police said. Davis was in his car when he heard a popping sound, which he initially thought was his car backfiring, McLellan said.

Davis was struck as he got out of the car, authorities said. Realizing he had been hearing gunfire, Davis dived behind another car for cover, McLellan said. A security guard found him and alerted police.

Davis reported hearing a total of eight shots, police said. Authorities were attempting to determine the direction from which the bullets were fired.
