Orel Hershiser continues to progress, working up to six innings and 75 pitches in his latest simulated game Friday in Philadelphia. Hershiser said his control and stamina continue to improve. “I feel like I’m making real good progress mechanically and good progress physically,” he said. “I had good location and good movement on the ball. I’d say my sinker’s sharp six times out of 10, compared to about three out of 10 two weeks ago, so that’s a good sign. It was nice to extend my arm for six innings and continue to have no fatigue.” Hershiser will decide his next step--another simulated game or start of a minor league rehabilitation stint--this weekend.

The Phillies changed their pitching rotation. Terry Mulholland will pitch tonight, and Jason Grimsley will start Sunday. . . . Brett Butler has hit in 10 games in a row and is five for 11 with runners in scoring position. . . . Eddie Murray’s first-inning home run was his first since April 22. . . . The Phillies’ run in the fifth broke a string of 22 scoreless innings by Ramon Martinez. . . . Former infielder Glenn Hoffman was named manager of the Dodgers’ Pioneer League team at Great Falls, Mont. He replaces Joe Vavra, who was promoted to Class-A Yakima.
