Heavyweight Tucker Headlines Forum Card
Former International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion Tony Tucker is scheduled to fight Jay Thomas in the feature event at Monday night’s Forum boxing card.
Tucker (39-1, 32 knockouts) has fought six times since losing a 12-round decision to Mike Tyson on Aug. 1, 1987. He is the last boxer to go the distance with Tyson.
If Tucker is victorious against Thomas (15-6-2, seven KOs), he is scheduled fight a yet-to-be-named opponent on the Virgil Hill-Thomas Hearns undercard June 3 at Caesars Palace.
In the co-feature, world amateur champion Kelcie Banks (16-1-1, 11 KOs) fights Marco Antonio Ramirez (38-15-1, 30 KOs) in a lightweight bout.
First bout is at 7.
The San Pedro Peninsula YMCA placed 10th in a field of 210 teams at the National YMCA Swimming Championships in Orlando, Fla., last week. Individually, Claudia Martinez finished first in the 400-yard individual medley, third in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.
Others who placed included Deborah Kory, who finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke, second in the 100-yard breast-stroke and third in the 200-yard individual medley; Roy Elliott, who placed 13th in the 50-yard freestyle and 13th in the 100-yard freestyle, and Chris McAllister, with a 13th-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.
In relay competition, the girls’ 800-yard freestyle team of Martinez, Kory, Alisa Scudamore and Sarah McFarland placed eighth; the girls’ 400-yard medley team composed of Martinez, Kory, Mayuko Abe and Tina Leuthard placed 11th; the girls’ 400-yard freestyle team of Martinez, Kory, Scudamore and Leuthard finished 15th and the boys’ 800-yard freestyle team that included Elliott, McAllister, Chris Willoughby and Jess Withey finished 11th.
The swim club is coached by Dan Halladay.
El Camino College plans a 20th reunion of its 1971 state championship football team, but it needs help in locating former players. Information: Walt Justice at (213) 715-7677.
The California Seals baseball club, in conjunction with Harbor College, will present a baseball card show May 11 in the college gymnasium.
The show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $3. Additional fees may be charged for autographs by former baseball players in attendance.
Paul (Pops) Ivanovsky, former Harbor College baseball Coach Jim O’Brien and first-year Coach Tony Bloomfield are organizing the event. The show is also soliciting dealers.

Alfredo Rosas of San Pedro finished first in the Laguna Beach 10-K April 21. Rosas, 31, was clocked in a time of 30:42. Earlier this season Rosas won the Las Vegas marathon.

Former Harbor College baseball Coach Jim O’Brien will be honored at a special dinner on May 8 at the Madeo Ristorante in San Pedro. O’Brien had a 460-171-2 record and won three state championships in his 15-year coaching career at Harbor.
Among those honoring O’Brien at the 7 p.m. dinner will be USC baseball Coach Mike Gillespie and Pepperdine University Coach Andy Lopez.
