For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

* Add 3 to 4 inches of mulch to flower and vegetable beds as well as around established trees and shrubs to keep the ground weed free and to prevent loss of moisture.

* Check ties and stakes on young trees and rose trees. Replace them if needed.

* Feed hanging basket fuchsias, bougainvillea, lantanas and others with a good general purpose fertilizer or fish emulsion.

* There’s still plenty of time to plant a vegetable garden. Check with your local nurseries and garden centers for seedlings and other supplies.

* It’s time to thin the fruit on fruit trees, especially apples. Leave about 5 inches between fruit and get ready for apple pies!
