COUNTYWIDE : College to Honor 6 Women for Efforts
Rancho Santiago College will honor women from throughout the county for their contributions to the community on Friday at its eighth annual Women of Achievement Awards.
This year’s award recipients are: Jo Cains, director of community relations for KOCE-TV Channel 50; Lorri Galloway, executive director and founder of the Eli Home Inc., a facility for abused children in Orange County; Gladys Gleason, founder of the Speech and Language Development Center; Mitsuye Yamada, an advocate for human rights and women’s issues; Gloria Davenport, a career counselor at Rancho Santiago College, and Olevia Freeman, a Rancho Santiago College student who, despite suffering from a rare form of polymyositis--a disease that causes the inflammation of voluntary muscles--continues her studies and is a Little League mom.
The program, featuring U.S. Rep. Barbara Boxer (D-Greenbrae) as the keynote speaker, will be in the Johnson Center on the college’s Santa Ana campus at 17th and Bristol streets. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a buffet dinner and the awards program at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public, but reservations are required. The cost is $20 per person, $10 for students. For more information, call the Rancho Santiago College Foundation at (714) 564-6090.
