COL NOTEBOOK : U. S. Champion Reilly Loses Decision to Soviet in Boxing Competition

Pepe Reilly, who won the 147-pound division at last month’s U. S. Amateur Boxing Championships, lost a unanimous decision to a boxer from the Soviet Union last week during an international meet in Spokane, Wash.

Reilly, recovering from a slight hand injury suffered at the U. S. championships, lost to Vladimir Yereschenko in a meet won by the Soviet Union, 7-5.

School days: The Los Angeles Unified School District will go to year-round class schedule in the fall, but the athletic programs at City Section schools such as Marshall, Eagle Rock, Franklin and Verdugo Hills will continue to follow their traditional schedules.

That decision was reached Monday when the board voted to allocate $1.2 million for buses, coaching and supervisory costs.

Winter sports affected include boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer and boys’ wrestling.

“It’s kind of weird thinking of having a basketball game with no cheerleaders or people in the stands,” said Wendy Triplett, girls’ basketball coach at Marshall. “It will be like a Clippers game a few years ago.”

All-Star: Tara Walker of Marshall High has been selected to join some of the top senior basketball players in Southern California in the seventh College Prep Basketball Classic on April 11 at the Forum.

Walker, a 5-foot-10 senior who was selected to the Times’ All-Glendale team, averaged 11.4 points and 14 rebounds for the Barristers. She is the Glendale area’s lone representative to the classic, which consists of boys’ and girls’ all-star games. The games will pit Southern Section teams against teams representing the City Section.

Roosevelt Coach Lorenzo Garcia, whose team won its first City Section 3-A Division championship this season, will coach the City Section girls.

The girls’ game begins at noon with the boys’ game following at 2:30 p.m.

Add all-stars: Glendale-area players were on the losing end of both the boys’ and girls’ contests Saturday in the Glendale-Burbank Shootout at Woodbury College.

Burbank won the boys’ game, 127-114. Chris Maxwell and Jaiquin Moore of Ribet Academy led the Glendale team in scoring with 26 and 23 points.

Burbank won the girls’ game, 56-53. Debbie Nilsen of Flintridge Sacred Heart had a team-high 11 points for Glendale.

All-Southern Section picks: Karen Pearson of Flintridge Prep and Ribet Academy’s Kate Stoll were selected to the All-Southern Section Division V first team and Melissa Lord of La Canada was selected to the All-Southern Division III first team for their play in the basketball season.

Pearson, a 5-9 senior, averaged 15.1 points a game. Stoll, a 5-9, senior averaged 20 points.

Lord, a 5-10 sophomore, averaged 15 points a game.

Nilsen, who averaged 18 points a game, was selected to the Division IV second team.

Qualifiers: Occidental College increased the number of athletes in its contingent for the NCAA Division III track and field championships with several qualifying performances at last weekend’s Northridge Invitational.

Ty Wingard qualified in the javelin with a throw of 200 feet, 6 inches and Jacqui Dent qualified in the women’s 400 meters with an effort of 56.34 seconds.

Dent also was a member of the Tigers’ mile (3:55.9) and 4 X 100-meter (48.63) relay teams, which include Mashairi Dunn, Binti Allen and Shannon Haack.

Konstantine Kendriech, who qualified last week in the 5,000 meters, also qualified in the 1,500 with a time of 3:51.7 at Northridge.

Add qualifiers: Glendale College runner Rick Provenzano qualified for the Southern California Community College prelims with strong effort at the Northridge Invitational.

Provenzano ran the 800 meters in 1:52.7.

It’s over: Royal High of Simi Valley concluded the rain-delayed Babe Herman high school baseball tournament with a 6-2 victory over Rio Mesa in the championship game Saturday.

Royal defeated Arcadia, Crescenta Valley, Canyon and Rio Mesa en route to the title of the 28th annual tournament at Stengel Field.

Crescenta Valley defeated Hoover, 10-4, for seventh place.

Rebuilding: Hoover High basketball Coach Kirt Kohlmeier has kept his basketball team busy during the spring break, but not on the court.

Kohlmeier has been remodeling his kitchen and he recruited his players to help.

“They have been chipping away and the tile is about to go in,” he said. “It’s taken longer than I anticipated. I figured it would be cheaper to just pay them to do it.

“I’ve been spending a fortune at Jack in the Box. I’m the one who’s been keeping them in business lately.”

Charging ahead: Bob Gagliano, the NFL’s version of the traveling man, is moving again.

A standout quarterback at Hoover High and Glendale College in the mid-1970s, Gagliano reached agreement on a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers on Friday.

The move marks his 10th team in his 11 years in pro football.

“He’s had an up-and-down career, but when he’s had the opportunity to play, he’s played well,” Chargers General Manager Bobby Beathard said.

Most of that opportunity came in the past two seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he started 11 games, completing 204 of 391 passes for 2,861 yards and 16 touchdowns. He threw 22 interceptions.

“He’ll compete for the starting position,” said Beathard. “Right now, Billy’s (Joe Tolliver) our quarterback, but we’ll see.”
