“Bait’s Rights--Stop the Killing!” cried the ad in Santana, a local sailing magazine.

Members of several groups announced that they would hold a demonstration on Belmont Pier in Long Beach on Monday, then stage “a two-mile swim to the bait barge off the . . . breakwater. We plan to encircle the barge.”

Listed as sponsors of the protest were Greenpiece , the Coalition for Life for All Mollusks (CLAM) and Parents, Educators and Environmentalists to Save Anchovies (PEETSA).

Santana advertising manager Lorin Weiss said a lot of people took the ad seriously, including a worried member of the county Beaches-Harbors Department, who phoned for more details.

The believers apparently forgot what day Monday was.

Irene Nachreiner of Redondo Beach jokes that each time she approaches the corner of Goodman Avenue and 190th Street in that city, “I am gripped with anxiety, never quite sure what to do.” You can see why from one of the accompanying photos.

But, even if it isn’t always clear which traffic sign to obey there, Redondo Beach does earn points for its thematic street signs (see second photo). Maybe L.A. should follow suit. How better to capture the fun of living in the City of Motoring Angels than street signs decorated with tiny images of the Four-Level Interchange?

As Chuck Chappell of San Marino and others pointed out, we could have used some directional signs ourselves the other day when we said that Slauson Avenue was in Compton. We meant to say that Slauson’s in the City of Commerce. Either that or we meant to say that Compton Boulevard’s in Compton.

List of the Day:

We recently mentioned that L.A. eateries lay claim to inventing such delights as the French dip sandwich, the cheeseburger and the hot fudge sundae. Cal Poly Pomona Prof. Gloria Lothrop points out that L.A. also claims to have introduced some other famous specialties, including:

1--Veal Oskar (Kenneth Hansen of Scandia restaurant).

2, 3--Cobb Salad, Shirley Temple Cocktail (Bob Cobb of the Brown Derby restaurants).

4--Chili “size” (chili burger) (Tommy De Forest of the original Ptomaine Tommy’s).

L.A. is often the target of sarcastic comments, and the Rodney King-LAPD affair has done nothing to curb the trend. San Francisco columnist Herb Caen printed a suggestion that L.A. Police Chief Daryl F. Gates be replaced by Richard Steele, a boxing referee. Steele is the man who was accused of stopping the recent Tyson-Ruddock match too soon .

Troxey Kemper of L.A. says that one thing doesn’t ring true about “You’ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again,” the best-seller by Julia Phillips about the bad and the unbeautiful of Hollywood. Kemper explains: “Shouldn’t it be, ‘You’ll Never Do Lunch in This Town Again’ ”?

Among the items in the lingerie museum of Frederick’s of Hollywood is the first dress ever worn on television by comic Milton Berle.
