U.S. Trade Deficit With China Soars: The deficit jumped in the first nine months of last year by 85% to $7.4 billion, the U.S. International Trade Commission reported. A big chunk of the deficit was due to a $500-million increase in imports of low-price Chinese shoes, to $1.3 billion. China has become the biggest source of shoes sold in this country--193 million pair in the nine months, compared to 154 million pair made here. U.S. imports also increased among textiles, clothing for men and boys, machinery, electrical equipment, luggage, dolls, toys, games and sporting goods.
