N.Y. Writers Pick Go For Wand
NEW YORK — Go For Wand, whose brilliance ended in tragedy on racing’s biggest day, is New York Horse of the Year for 1990.
The 3-year-old filly’s owner, Mrs. Jane du Pont Lunger, also was named the year’s outstanding owner in voting by the New York Turf Writers’ Assn.
Go For Wand was a clear winner in results announced Wednesday over other expected Eclipse Award winners as the best of their divisions--older horse Criminal Type, sprinter Housebuster, 2-year-old colt Fly So Free and 2-year-old filly Meadow Star.
Go For Wand won five consecutive Grade I stakes in New York. She was straining for No. 6 in a stretch duel with Bayakoa in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff Oct. 27 at Belmont Park when she fractured her right front ankle and was destroyed.
