THE GULF WAR: The Diplomatic Front : In Europe
The EUROPEAN COMMUNITY decided how it will divide $685 million in loans and grants to Egypt, Jordan and Turkey to help compensate for their losses from the Gulf conflict. Egypt will receive a grant of $240 million, Jordan a grant of $205 million and Turkey an interest-free loan of $240 million, the EC said in Brussels. Individual EC member nations earlier gave a total of $1.37 billion to the three states. In LONDON, Iraq’s ambassador to Britain, Azmi Shafik Salahi, ended his tour of duty and departed for Baghdad, leaving his second-in-command, Zhour Ibrihim, as head of the diplomatic mission. Since the invasion of Kuwait, Britain has expelled 47 Iraqi Embassy employees.
