The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said it has cut 255 jobs by laying off 133 employees and eliminating 122 vacant positions because of the continuing nationwide recession and a decline in the newspaper industry.

The company, one of Atlanta’s 10 largest employers with about 5,400 workers, said those laid off include 92 full-time and 41 part-time employees in all departments. They mark the newspaper’s first layoffs since the early 1980s and include 11 newsroom employees.

“The job reduction is part of continuing efforts to cut costs in the face of difficult economic times,” Publisher Jay Smith said.
