The St. Louis Blues’ Brett Hull, the leading goal-scorer in the NHL, got two in the first period and Rich Sutter added two 10 seconds apart in the third for a 6-3 victory at Detroit Friday night.

The Blues ended a six-game winless streak.

“Not only did we move the puck well (on the power play), we got a couple of goals,” said Hull, who has 29. “Tonight, I stayed mainly in the slot. I wasn’t over on the boards too much.

“We had a couple of days off and we got together and said we were trying to do too many things we weren’t capable of. We just said, ‘Do what you do best.’ ”

Hull’s first goal cut the Red Wings’ lead to 2-1 at 8:00 of the first period and his second, on a power play at 15:44, put the Blues ahead to stay. On both goals, Hull set up in the slot and shot before goalie Tim Cheveldae could react.

“I always admired the way (former New York Islander) Mike Bossy got his shot off so quickly,” Blue defenseman Harold Snepsts said. “I think Brett Hull gets his off quicker. And that’s saying something.”

Snepsts scored during the second period, his first goal since Dec. 17, 1989.

Quebec 5, Calgary 3--Tony McKegney scored two power-play goals, leading the Nordiques to their first victory in Calgary in more than four years.

The Nordiques, with the second-worst record in the NHL, gained their third point against the Flames in six nights. The teams played to a 5-5 tie Sunday in Quebec City.

Edmonton 4, N.Y. Rangers 3--Joe Murphy scored two goals as the Oilers came back from a 2-0 deficit at Edmonton.

Murphy took Ken Linseman’s pass in the corner and skated in front to beat goalie John Vanbiesbrouck with a backhander for his second goal, at 13:27 of the final period. Glenn Anderson and Mike Gartner scored later in the period for Edmonton.

Hartford 4, Buffalo 3--Pat Verbeek tied the score with 30 seconds left in regulation play and Scott Young scored 53 seconds into overtime for the Whalers at Buffalo.

It was the sixth consecutive victory for the Whalers on the road, a club record.

Washington 5, New Jersey 2--Mike Ridley scored three goals, two of them short-handed, as the Capitals ended the Devils’ six-game unbeaten streak at Landover, Md.

It was Ridley’s fourth hat trick, his first this season. Soviet defenseman Mikhail Tatarinov had three assists for the Capitals and goalie Don Beaupre stopped 27 shots against the Devils, who had been averaging five goals in their last eight games.

Vancouver 2, Pittsburgh 2--Kevin Stevens scored with 4:26 left in regulation play to give the Penguins the tie at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins are 1-5-1 in their last seven home games.
