Jane Au has been reelected president of the South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation. Au, president in 1984-86 and 1989-90, also has served as chairwoman of Fiesta de Flores, on the fund-raising and master plan committees, as associate editor of the foundation’s publication, Compost, and in 1983 was named the foundation’s Volunteer of the Year. Other Botanic Garden board members are Peter Dawson, Victor Bennett, Shirley Borks, James White, Dick Kohlschreiber, Marilyn Drew, Hodge Amemiya, John Bohannon, Glenous Absmeir, Bill Box, Gary Greene, Marianna Hofer, Jeanne Jones, Susann Norton, Richard Peiser, Thomas Rische, Sharon Ryan and Lola Ungar.
Dr. Daniel Hovenstine has joined the radiation oncology department at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Hovenstine is an assistant professor of radiation oncology at Loma Linda University and has been affiliated with Glendale Adventist Medical Center and White Memorial Medical Center. A graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Hovenstine is a certified member of the American Board of Radiology/Radiation Oncology.
Twenty-four seniors were presented with Westchester High School academic jackets by the Academic Booster Club for earning cumulative grade-point averages of 3.5 or more. They are: Tayo Balogun, Marta Calderon, John Chavez, Quashena Cooper, Amy Davis, Stephanie Drago, Danelle Dukesherer, Antonio Duran, Amalea Fisher, Cynthia Gibson, Kara Hatfield, Brian Hirai, Thomas Jaros, Shakeesha Jeffries, Anne Lee, Allison Lorkiewicz, Basman Massa, Adrianha Prothro, Said Pulido, Salem Rabadi, Sarajane Ross, Yuko Sakamoto, Wes Smith and Shanay Trunnell. The keynote speaker of the program was Michael Josephson, Westchester graduate and president of the Josephson Institute for the Advancement of Ethics.
Michael Genovese, Loyola Marymount University associate professor of political science, is the author ofa new, recently published book, “The Nixon Presidency: Power and Politics in Turbulent Times.” Genovese spent four years on research for the book. He has written two other books: “Politics and the Cinema: An Introduction to Political Films” and “The
Supreme Court, The Constitution and Presidential Power.” His most recent book was published by Greenwood Publishing Group.
A team of six Rolling Hills High School students placed sixth in the finals of the Ambassadors to Europe competition, co-sponsored by Lufthansa Airlines and The Los Angeles Times. They are Brian Algra, Henry Chuang, William Fork, Julianne Ludwig, Stacy Weiss and Charles Yu. All are students in Adrienne Phillips’ advanced placement European history class. The Rolling Hills team was one of 12 to compete in the finals on Nov. 15. Each team submitted an essay focusing on “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” in Germany and one additional European country.
