SOUTH ROUNDUP : Sisson a Hero Once Again for Georgia Tech, 6-3

Scott Sisson kicked two fourth-quarter field goals, the second one a 38-yarder with eight seconds remaining, enabling No. 7 Georgia Tech to escape with a 6-3 nonconference victory Saturday over Virginia Tech at Atlanta.

Sisson beat top-ranked Virginia with a 37-yard field goal with seven seconds left last week and gave the Yellow Jackets a 13-13 tie with North Carolina earlier in the season by kicking a 27-yarder with 1:01 to play.

His second field goal against Virginia Tech, which capped a 63-yard drive, was kicked into winds gusting from 15 to 25 m.p.h.

The Yellow Jackets (8-0-1) are unbeaten in their last 13 games, and have won 12 in a row at home.

Sisson, who missed two attempts in the first half, gave Georgia Tech a 3-3 tie with 5:09 remaining with a 33-yard field goal.

The Hokies (5-5), a 14-point underdog, took a 3-0 lead on a 22-yard field goal by Mickey Thomas with 8:16 left to play.

No. 11 Virginia 24, North Carolina 10--The Cavaliers, who dropped from the No. 1 ranking by losing to Georgia Tech last week, came back to beat the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Virginia improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina fell to 5-4-1 and 2-3-1.

Shawn Moore, the nation’s top-rated passer, passed 13 yards to Herman Moore for a touchdown on Virginia’s first drive, and then connected with Terry Kirby on a 42-yard scoring play with 4:46 left before halftime. Herman Moore played despite two sprained big toes.

North Carolina State 16, Duke 0--The Blue Devils, who had averaged 41 points in their last three games against the Wolfpack and were coming off a 57-20 victory over Wake Forest, were shut out at Raleigh, N.C.

Bobby Jurgens scored on a 55-yard play and North Carolina State’s defense sacked Duke quarterbacks seven times and picked off five passes.

The Wolfpack improved to 6-5 and 3-4. Duke is 4-6 and 1-5.

South Carolina 38, Southern Illinois 13--Bobby Fuller passed to Robert Brooks for two touchdowns as the Gamecocks (5-4) ended a three-game losing streak by defeating the the Division I-AA Salukis (2-9) at Columbia, S.C.
