Southern Section to Hear Brande Case on Nov. 28

The Southern Section has scheduled a Nov. 28 hearing to determine if Charlie Brande, former Corona del Mar boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach, violated section rules.

Brande resigned as the Sea Kings’ coach in August in the wake of an investigation by the Southern Section office. The alleged violations involved girls’ teams Brande coaches for Orange County Volleyball.

Southern Section rules prohibit high school coaches from working with players outside the regular season--from January to mid-May--when the players still have eligibility remaining. Several county players compete on Brande’s summer teams.

Brande says he works only with seniors--those with no high school eligibility remaining.

“When we get into the hearing, I think they (review panel) will see that there has been no wrongdoing,” Brande said.

Brande declined a hearing in September after the section agreed to drop all allegations against him if he agreed not to coach the Sea King boys or girls this season and not seek legal action against the section.

But Brande said he was unaware of another stipulation in the agreement: That he would not coach at any section high school during the 1990-91 school year.

“That made me really upset,” Brande said. “They have no right to tell me that. That wasn’t part of the original deal.

“I found out about it more than a month ago. I figured they (the section) would just drop it.”

Brande said he has been contacted about coaching the boys’ teams at Marina, Edison and Laguna Beach this spring. He says he’s unsure if he would want to coach boys in the spring if he were allowed to.

“I really don’t know if I would have the time,” he said.

Southern Section Commissioner Stan Thomas was unavailable for comment.
