Sophomore tailback Tico Duckett rushed for a career-high 229 yards and scored a touchdown as No. 22 Michigan State beat Rutgers, 34-10, in a nonconference game Saturday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

Duckett, whose previous high was 175 yards, carried 33 times and was the workhorse as Michigan State, which came within a point of upsetting top-ranked Notre Dame last week, scored on all four of its second-half possessions to break a 10-10 halftime tie.

John Langeloh added field goals of 26 and 21 yards as Michigan State (1-1-1) won its 500th game. Langeloh’s 10 points--he kicked four extra points--gave him 260 for his career, moving him one point behind Morten Andersen for the school record.

The big drive for Michigan State came at the start of the second half when the Spartans drove 68 yards in 10 plays with Rob Roy scoring from one yard out. Duckett gained 55 yards in six carries during the drive.

Rutgers is 2-2.

West Virginia 38, Pittsburgh 24--The Mountaineers rolled up 547 yards to upset the Panthers at Pittsburgh.

Greg Jones completed 16 of 25 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and Mike Beasley gained 135 of his 197 yards in the first half when West Virginia (3-1-1) took a 28-7 lead, then stopped Pitt (2-2-1) twice at the one-yard line.

Pitt’s Ricky Turner returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and also had an 18-yard reception for a touchdown. It was Pitt’s first kickoff return for a touchdown since Gordon “Rooster” Jones’ 93-yarder against Army in 1977.

Boston College 28, Navy 17--Freshman Glenn Foley passed for three touchdowns to lead the Eagles (1-2) over the Midshipmen (2-2) at Annapolis, Md.

Foley’s first-quarter scoring pass to fullback Ed Toner was the first touchdown scored by the Boston College offense this year.
