Full Weekend of Racing at Ascot
Ascot Park will hold a full Labor Day weekend of auto racing. Sprint cars are featured Saturday in the California Racing Assn. Series Labor Day Sweepstakes at 8 p.m. It will be a 50-lap race. Sunday’s 6 p.m. card will feature pro stocks in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series, plus bomber oval, figure 8 and a demolition derby. Monday’s 6 p.m. races will feature a 150-lap International Enduro for foreign and domestic stocks.
The California Seals, a newly formed semipro baseball team, will hold tryouts for players 17 to 25 on Saturday at Marine Park in Manhattan Beach. Tryouts will begin at 9 a.m. There will be another session from 5 to 7 p.m. for those not able to attend the morning workout. The Seals will play a winter league schedule of 60 to 100 games starting in mid-September. Information: (213) 373-3805.
The city of Lawndale is seeking umpires for its adult softball league. Play begins on Sept. 10. Umpires earn $16 a game, which are played nightly Monday through Friday. The Gardena Poolrats won a number of medals in the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation Championships last weekend at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium at USC. Coached by Sharon Curto and Jacques Drapeau, the Poolrats got firsts from Kristi Atkins in the girls 13-14 age group 100-meter freestyle, Masayoshi Sakai in boys 11-12 butterfly, Briana Lloyd in girls 11-12 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter breaststroke, Robin Nehring in girls 7-8 backstroke, Takamichi Sawa in boys 11-12 backstroke, David Ferry in boys 11-12 breast-stroke and Gustavo Mole in boys 15-18 50-meter freestyle.
