50 Consumer Products Get New ‘Green’ Seal of Approval

The Green Cross environmental certification program issued its first certificates of environmental excellence Wednesday.

The program, supported by four retail chains operating hundreds of stores in the Western states, judged 50 consumer products to contain the highest levels of recycled material possible under state-of-the-art technology. The items ranged from paper products to plastic trash bags to fireplace logs.

Hope and Start brand paper towels, napkins, facial and bathroom tissues, made by Orchids Paper Products Co. of La Palma, were cited for products made entirely from recycled fibers.

Other products certified for using high percentages of recycled fiber and wood include: Will-Cycle paper grocery bags, produced by Willamette Industries Inc., of Portland, Ore.; Pope & Talbot Inc., also of Portland, for napkins, towels, facial and bathroom tissues marketed under brand names including Pert, Capri, Gayety, Nature’s Choice and Gentle Touch; Today’s Choice line of paper products, made by Confab Cos. of Wayne, Pa.; Renew and Good Sense brand plastic trash bags, made by Webster Industries, of Peabody, Mass., and Fire to Go compressed wood logs, from Green Fields Inc. of Hillsboro, Ore.
