La Verne : City Joins Waste Authority
To help comply with California’s waste-reduction requirements, the City Council decided Tuesday to join other San Gabriel Valley cities in the East San Gabriel Valley Integrated Waste Management Joint Powers Authority.
The state requires cities to reduce their waste by 25% by 1995 and by 50% by 2000. The 17-city authority will attempt to address the problem regionally rather than city-by-city.
According to La Verne Finance Officer Ronald Clark, the authority will be funded by participating cities and the Los Angeles County Public Works Department. Of the cost borne by the cities, La Verne will pay about 5%. However, the total cost of the authority is yet to be determined.
