NATION : Lobstermen to Hold Giveaway
PORTLAND, Me. — A lobster marketing group today announced that a number of lobstermen upset about rock-bottom wholesale prices plan to give away about 500 pounds of the crustaceans to soup kitchens and senior citizen centers.
“Rather than lose money on the lobsters, they thought they would like to spread them around and give them to some people who may not get the chance to enjoy lobster very often,” said Alan Caron, director of the Maine Lobster Marketing Group.
Retail prices in the state have dropped to as low as $2.75 per pound. “It’s a better bargain than hamburger,” Caron said.
