Brazilians Win Cup; U.S. Third
Gaucho scored the only goal, 59 seconds into the game, and Flamengo of Brazil made it stand up Sunday for a 1-0 victory over Alianza of Lima, Peru, for the championship of the Marlboro Cup of New York at East Rutherford, N.J.
John Harkes’ goal five minutes into the second half gave the U.S. soccer team a 2-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon for third place.
Harkes, a midfielder seeking a contract with a European club, scored from 25 yards out off a rebound after Bruce Murray’s shot bounced off a defender.
Eric Wynalda scored for the United States in the 13th minute from eight yards out off Murray’s header following a long throw-in by John Doyle.
