El Monte : Complaint About Laborers

Mayor Don McMillen reported to the City Council on Tuesday that managers of businesses in the Home Club shopping center on Peck Road have complained about day laborers who congregate at the shopping center.

McMillen said he wants to set up a meeting between city officials and area business people to come up with an alternate location for the contract laborers to gather. The workers wait for employers to drive by and hire them for the day, but “if they don’t get picked up, they’re there three or four hours, and they lie down on the lawn,” prompting the complaints, McMillen said.

When a new location is designated, signs directing the laborers to it will be posted, and initially, city buses might be used to take the laborers to the new pickup site, McMillen said.

Councilman Jack Crippen said up to 150 of these workers gather daily at the Home Club center.
