P.M. BRIEFING : Apple Starts New Line of Printers
Apple Computer Inc. today launched a new line of low-cost LaserWriter printers for its Macintosh computers in a move analysts said was aimed at beating back low-priced rivals that have cut into its market.
Personal LaserWriter SC, priced at $1,999, is a single-user laser printer for customers requiring basic text and graphics.
Personal LaserWriter NT, priced at $3,299, is a multi-user laser printer for individuals and small work groups with more advanced graphics needs.
Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple’s current three laser printers now cost between $2,800 and $6,000, well above competitors’ price range of $1,400 to $3,000.
Apple’s introduction of low-priced laser printers falls in line with its strategy to offer low-cost products throughout its line.
