Women’s Pro Volleyball Play Begins Today
Janice Opalinski of San Juan Capistrano and Jackie Silva of Redondo Beach will put their five-match winning streak on the line this weekend at the Huntington Beach Open women’s pro beach volleyball tournament.
The tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. today and Sunday at the Huntington Beach Pier. The finals are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday.
Opalinski and Silva have won all five tour stops since forming their partnership at the start of the season.
They will be among 32 teams competing for the $6,000 first prize. Others expected to play include Rita Crockett-Royster of Costa Mesa, Linda Chisholm-Carrillo, Patty Dodd, Karolyn Kirby, Nina Matthies and Elaine Roque.
Other activities at the Huntington Beach Pier this weekend include a longboard surfing contest starting at 7 a.m. today and Sunday, a wildest hairstyle contest at 1 p.m. Sunday and a series of trivia contests.
The PCH sky-diving team is scheduled to land at center court to deliver the game ball for Sunday’s volleyball final. The tournament will be taped by ESPN and shown July 23 at 5 p.m.
