Celtics Seek to Keep Shaw From Staying in Italy

The Boston Celtics asked a federal court Friday to prevent Brian Shaw from playing for another team, after an arbitrator confirmed the validity of a multiyear contract Shaw signed with the Celtics last winter.

In February, it was announced that Shaw had signed with the Celtics and would began playing with them in the 1990-91 season. But in a letter dated June 6, Shaw informed Boston officials that he plans to remain in Italy and play another year for the Italian team, Il Messaggero Roma.

Shaw was the No. 1 draft choice of the Celtics in 1988 and played in Boston in the 1988-89 season before going to Italy.

Celtic officials have filed a request in U.S. District Court for an order confirming the arbitrator’s ruling.

Shaw could not be reached for comment.
