Nation IN BRIEF : TENNESSEE : TVA Fined Over 3 Whistle-Blowers

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said its staff recommended a $240,000 fine against the Tennessee Valley Authority for allegedly retaliating against three whistle-blowing employees. In 1985, the employees, members of the TVA’s safety review staff, brought to the NRC’s attention safety concerns about the Watts Bar nuclear power plant under construction near Spring City, Tenn. The NRC said their concerns led the agency to question TVA quality assurance at the plant. The TVA had removed the three from their supervisory positions.
