Two young men were killed early Sunday when a pickup truck careened out of control, rolled onto its side and struck a utility pole.

Gustavo Gajardo, 19, of Laguna Hills and Michael Carras, 20,of El Toro were pronounced dead at the scene, said John Isbister, a dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol.

The two were southbound in a 1988 Toyota pickup on Avenida de la Carlota, just south of Lake Forest Drive, when the vehicle apparently veered to the right, Isbister said. The pickup struck a curb, rolled onto its side and struck a telephone pole, then slid off the roadway, he said.

The accident was not discovered until a newspaper carrier came upon the wreckage and reported it to the CHP, Isbister said.

Both Gajardo and Carras were wearing seat belts, Isbister said. The cause of the accident has not been determined, he said.
