HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Kennedy’s Beaumaster Stops Cleveland

Junior right-hander Cody Beaumaster allowed no earned runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked none Thursday to lead Kennedy High past Cleveland, 3-2, in a North Valley League game at Kennedy.

With the score tied, 2-2, and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Troy Bourne was hit by a pitch thrown by Cleveland’s Bobby Macias. Garret Anderson then lined an apparent game-winning home run to right-center, but the ball was ruled to have either bounced over or through the Golden Cougars’ newly installed temporary fence and Bourne and Anderson were held at second and third.

After an intentional walk to Lazaro Campos loaded the bases, Palmer Drain sent a grounder up the middle to win the game.

“We had guys who had good games, but Cody was the star,” Kennedy Coach Manny Alvarado said of Beaumaster (3-0). “He kept us in the game.”

Drain and Anderson each had two hits for Kennedy (7-1, 3-0 in league play). Pat Bryant and Mike Petruzates each had two hits for Cleveland (1-2, 1-2).

In other baseball games:

El Camino Real 7, Canoga Park 1--Pat Treend, a right-handed senior, struck out 11 and limited Canoga Park to four hits to notch his second win in a West Valley League game at El Camino Real.

Jeff Marks, Ryan McGuire, Greg Lederman and Jason Cohen each had three hits for the Conquistadores (3-0, 3-0). Both Cohen and Lederman drove in three runs. The Hunters are 0-3 in league play.

San Fernando 6, Granada Hills 5 (10 innings)--With two out in the top of the 10th, San Fernando’s John Najar slammed a three-run homer in a North Valley League game at Granada Hills.

Mike Komsky’s two-run homer in the bottom of the inning cut the margin to one, but left-hander Hector De La Cruz preserved the victory.

The homer was Najar’s fourth of the season. San Fernando (5-1-1, 2-1) also received a home run from Octavio Serrano. Robert Vasquez homered for Granada Hills (1-6, 0-3).

Sylmar 5, Grant 3--Robert Garcia tripled and Joe Contreraz doubled to lead host Sylmar (5-3, 1-2) to an East Valley League win.

Grant fell to 2-5, 1-2.

Monroe 9, Reseda 4--Sean Henson had two hits, drove in two runs and picked up the win with 4 1/3 innings of relief in a Mid-Valley League game at Monroe.

Henson (1-1) struck out nine, walked two and surrendered just three hits. John Langley had two hits and two runs batted in for Monroe. The win left Monroe tied with Reseda and Birmingham for the league lead at 2-1.

Faith Baptist 20, Bel-Air Prep 0--Gavin Amos was three for five and Alex Estrada added two hits and scored four runs for Faith Baptist (1-2, 1-0), which took advantage of 15 walks.

SOFTBALL

El Camino Real 10, Westchester 0--Chrissy Peck struck out 12 and allowed only two hits and Jenny Fleming and Cathy Balint each homered for host El Camino Real in a nonleague game. Peck, a senior who has allowed only one earned run, improved to 8-1.

Fleming hit a two-run homer that gave El Camino Real a 2-0 lead in the first inning and Balint added a solo shot in the sixth. Fleming and Ann Antis each had two hits and Carrie Reulbach drove in four runs for El Camino Real (8-1).

Reseda 16, Manual Arts 3--Rachel Reynoso was four for five and Michelle Brewer went three for three with a double and three RBIs to lead host Reseda in a nonleague game. Amy Pomrantz was two for three with a double for Reseda (2-3).

Sylmar 6, Chatsworth 4--With the score tied in the bottom of the sixth inning, Sylmar’s Wendy Alcantar hit a two-run homer to provide the margin of victory for the host Spartans (7-1) in a nonleague game.

The rally made a winner of pitcher Krystina Moore (4-0).

Alemany 18, Kennedy 1--Melanie Howard went three for five and drove in five runs in a nonleague game at Kennedy that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Krista Gomez hit her third home run of the season and Stacey Hart (3-1) picked up the win for Alemany (7-2).

San Fernando 8, Huntington Park 2--Denise Mendoza (5-2) allowed three hits, struck out 13 and walked one in a nonleague game at San Fernando.

Martha Cruz, Chris Ramirez, and Bernie Samaniego each had three hits and Gloria Sanchez added two for the Tigers (6-2).

Camarillo 4, Thousand Oaks 0--Nicole Victoria had a three-run home run in the first inning to spark Camarillo in a Marmonte League opener.

Simi Valley 4, Westlake 1--Kathy Beasley hit a two-run double to cap a four-run seventh inning in a Marmonte League opener at Westlake. Michele Castonguay (3-0) picked up the win.

Alyse Bartelstone went three for four with a triple and scored a run for the Pioneers.

Poly 26, Verdugo Hills 3--Anna Balderrama went three for four with five runs batted in and three runs scored for Poly (6-1) in a nonleague game at Verdugo Hills that was called after five innings.

Jodi Soto (6-1) went the distance for Poly.

Grant 21, Canoga Park 7--Elana Hernandez (1-1) hit two doubles, drove in two runs and picked up the win for host Grant (2-2) in a nonleague game.

Other hitting stars for Grant included Jill Lux (four for five, two RBIs); Shenia Smith (home run, two RBIs); Bonnie Diaz (three for four); and Hilaria Jimenez (two for four).

VOLLEYBALL

Crespi d. St. Bernard, 15-10, 15-9, 15-9--Mike Palumbo had 20 kills and Frank Romano added 10 for the Celts (4-0) in a nonleague match at Crespi.

Notre Dame d. Hart, 10-15, 15-11, 15-10, 15-13--Chris Raymond had 26 kills for Notre Dame (5-1) in a nonleague match at Hart. John Flaig had 21 kills for Hart (3-2).

Nordhoff d. Bishop Diego, 15-3, 15-11, 17-19, 15-7--Mike Wilson had 15 kills to lead host Nordhoff (3-1) in a nonleague match.

Flintridge Prep d. Montclair Prep, 15-3, 16-14, 3-15, 15-7--Ed Cibrian had 11 kills and Mehrdad Farhat had seven blocks for Montclair Prep (2-3) in a Liberty League match at Flintridge Prep.

Chatsworth 6, Sherman Oaks CES 1--Sanjay Srnivasan won at No. 1 singles and John Butiu teamed with Ji Kim at No. 1 doubles to lead Chatsworth to a nonleague victory at Balboa Park.

Burbank 12, Hoover 6--Paul McNiff and Peter Kim won at No. 1 doubles to lead Burbank to a nonleague win at Hoover.
