Two men were in critical condition after their car crashed Thursday into a power pole in the 1300 block of Kelton Road, police said.
The men, whose names were not available but who are believed to be in their 20s, were taken unconscious to UC San Diego Medical Center and Mercy Hospital.
The car was “wrapped around (the) power pole and completely severed at the fire wall,” a Fire Department spokesman said.
There was no fire and no one else was injured.
Witnesses told police the car was speeding when the driver lost control and slammed into the pole about 3:30 p.m.
The crash occurred across the street from Johnson Elementary School, but school had already finished for the day.
David Smith, an San Diego Gas & Electric spokesman, said the accident cut power to about 100 customers for a few hours.
